Thinking about a new camera

Postby f4denz » Fri Jun 27, 2008 3:52 pm

So I have been debating over getting a new PC, a new HD camcorder, or a Digital SLR camera.

I saw what appears to be a good deal at Costco on a Cannon Rebel XTI with two lenses and a bunch of accessories, but my question is where does that stack up against similar cameras. I have been less than impressed with the reviews on cnet.

More than anything, it depends on what type of pictures will you be taking. If you just want to take snapshots, aren't completely consumed by the quality, that camera is probably more than you want. It just depends what you want to use it for. I've seen some pics from one of those with a custom underwater housing and a good strobe for underwater photography and it looked great, but again, with my untrained eye, I didn't see a whole lot of difference between that and my reefmaster mini, and that's small enough to just strap to my wrist and is rated down to depths of 150 feet.

no thanks I like computers you can buy software for. Oh and ones that cost thousands less. Average price of similar Dell vs Apple the apple is over 150% for the exact same specs. Proof that form over function is for those with too much money. Reason that 90% of computers are still PC's running windows.

Denz....why do you want an SLR? With the good quality of the smaller cameras the only reason you would need an slr is if you wanted to take photos that you would need either a very wide angle lens or a very telephoto lens like the one I lug around. I usually just take my point and shoot if im out hiking or something as my bigger one is just a pain sometimes and i want one i can just stick in my pocket. so it would depend what you are wanting to take photos of and for what purpose. I dont recommend a rebel as i had their last model before digital came around and i hated it. if you want to borrow my canon 20d for a few days and see how you like it, you are welcome to.

My little one is simply too slow, when you try to take more than one picture in a short period of time. They also do not deal with motion very well.

I borrowed a friends d60(i think that was the model) for my stadium tour and was impressed with the response and quality of the pictures. It really wasn't too heavy, but I did like the fact that I could take more pictures more quickly and it did much better with motion than my small one.

I may end up just getting a newer small one, mine is like 3 yrs old.

Just thinking of fun ways to blow money, other than buying more season tickets.

Um Imac is not a decent computer, I am not a graphic designer or a teen age girl, so apples have no "a peal" to me. Sorry I would rather have a computer that has software other than itunes available for it. Oh wait you could buy an apple to run MS office, but again why would you pay double for a machine that simply doesn't do anything more than a PC, and has a hell of a lot fewer options when it comes to software.

Get the Canon G9...I have been super happy with this camera!

And if you want to you can trick it out with accessories.

I like apple products, but for the most part they are totally form over function.

The ipod is one of the weakest, least feature rich mp3 players on the market, but they have a slick ad company so they sell more. airbooks are super thin and don't have any drives so they lack functionality, but a slick ad and they sell.

I would rather have a product without the slick ad campaign trying to convince me I am cool if I use a particular product, it is part of the reason we have so many people so far in debt. Buying stuff they really don't need.

Like me buying a $1000 camera, I don't need it and I sure as hell would never buy one on credit. But I got a nice bonus at work, so time to spoil myself.
