If you were to tell people that we would get a striker who had played for Boca Juniors as an 18 year old and was on loan from Newell's Old Boys most people woould consider that a major signing.
Because of the bouncing around and coaching changes that have kept him out of the starting linueup Luis Miguel Escalada simply isn't a known quantity. I do expect that he will add a flair to the RSL attack, but again he is very young (23), but once he gets beyond the language barrier and different style of play he could have a breakout summer (think about the rapid progression of Olave last season), when he faced similar challenges.
Then add in Tino Nunez, who is injured but when healthy he showed a lot of promise in limited first team action last year but played very well with the reserves 5 goals in 800 minutes.
I am wondering what proven, "name" you would go after? Ching- 1 goal but always gone for national team duty, Twellman -0 goals and hurt (just like last year), Kenny Cooper - 2 goals but if they won't let him go to the EPL why would they let him come to RSL.
There are some mega names you can think of but given the fact that we made a hell of a good run last year with the guys we have, would you really go out and spend millions in transfer fee, and millions more in salary to get a "name" who probably wouldn't fit in with the team?
I think we need to work on the development of Yura, Robbie, Tino, and integration of LME, which give us some nice options. Remember that you also have both Clint Mathis, you know the only guy in MLS history to score 5 goals in a match, and Will Johnson, who has played forward in the past available as well.
I think we are in better shape than most people think, but I think options should always be kept open. Midseason trade or the summer transfer window may bring some added firepower.
The RCB is moving to sections 8 & 9 at the new stadium, do you have your 2009 season tickets?
