Gold Cup Defended

Postby f4denz » Sun Jun 24, 2007 2:07 pm

In what is the best US vs. Mexico match that I have seen in a long time, a shot from a fairly new player on the US scene secures the win for the Red, White and Blue. What a match. 2-1 is a great result and now we are kings of CONCACAF, again

Fox Soccer will be re-playing it this week as well as the RSL-DC match.

Yes I have it on my DVR, and Yes they will be replaying it all week. I hate the FSC coverage, their picture sucks and they didn't show hardly any fan shots during either match.

Interesting footnote

NEW YORK (AP) -- The CONCACAF Gold Cup final attracted 41 percent more television households in the United States than the Stanley Cup finals clincher -- and that was just for the soccer game's Spanish-language telecast.
The United States' 2-1 come-from-behind victory over Mexico on Sunday received a 2.5 fast national rating on Univision, the network said Tuesday. That translates to 2.83 million households, nearly double the 1.48 million homes that watched the 2005 Gold Cup final between the United States and Panama.
This year's English-language telecast was on the Fox Soccer Channel, which is available in about 30 million homes and is not rated. Anaheim's series-ending 6-2 victory over Ottawa in the Stanley Cup on June 6 received a 1.8 rating on NBC, which comes to 2,005,000 households. The rating is the percentage watching a telecast among all homes with televisions, and a ratings point represents 1,114,000 households.

So tell us how you really feel.

The shame is the real numbers can't be know since FSC is not included in ratings measurements (how wrong is that?) So of the 30 million households with FSC, one has to wonder if another 1 million or so were watching the match as well. This on top of last summers World Cup numbers should be sending a message that soccer is moving up the popularity lists here in the US.

Has anyone seen any numbers from Thursday Night MLS on ESPN2? I am sure they pale in comparison to these numbers but I bet they would be interesting.
