My buddy just called me while he was driving across the Golden Gate Bridge. He wanted to know if Barry Bonds just broke the record, because there were a ton of fireworks going off across the bay.

Quick look on http://espn.go.com/ and sure enough..Barry has broken the record.

If he'd broken it without steroids I'd be impressed.

No matter what Bonds says, the record is tainted.

The thing that really bothers me about Bonds especially is that he would have been a hall of fame guy without steroids. What bothers me about baseball in general is that it seems all the steroid talk centers around Bonds and other guys are not even really looked at, for example Roger Clements.

I really don't see Roger Clemens as a candidate for steroids.
He is a shining example of busting your ass when it comes to training. Teammates half his age HATE working out with him. I think if he was doing steroids he would be hurling fire all the time. He still has the heat when he needs it, but he is more super control and ball placement.

Not to mention that he comes back from a start like someone half his age. That's one of the biggest things that someone like a pitcher would get from it. Just because someone works hard does not mean that they do not use steroids. Want a really good indicator, steroids causes your head size to increase which is obvious with both Clements and Bonds. Clements has gained almost an entire cap size since he pitched for Boston in 1986. As for Bonds, look at him when he played for Pittsburg. Best example of that is Mark McGwire though.

This is why Major League Baseball can suck my balls.........

Roger Clemens is a fucking joke. When he played for the Sox, he was a shitty pitcher with a terrible ERA and a sub 90 fastball. Not to mention he was a damn bean pole. Somehow when Roger was with the Jays he magically gained like 50 pounds in one year. I guarantee you, his massive size did not come from his "work ethic". He, like a majority of MLB players, used steroids at some point in his career to gain some sort of advantage. There's just as much integrity to baseball today as fucking pro-wrestling. Vince McMahon and Mr. Bud "Integrity" Sielig should just combine their two "sports". That would be the shit!!!! They could call it XLB - Xtreme League Baseball. Now that would be some good watchin.

Would people get to break bats over other people's heads? That would be bad ass. Sparky I think we need to write to Uncle Vince...

doubt, that the rocket is on the juice. He is just fat, like many of us. When you put that much weight behind a ball it is bound to fly faster.

I think Bond's should enjoy the short lived record. A-rod will be there in just 4-5 years at his current pace, I expect that he will push the record to 700 barring any major injuries. He is only 32 and has been averaging 40 a year since he came into the league. Is there a better player in baseball that gets less respect and is hated by so many?

Good call. I don't hate him but he does play for the yankees.  There is definitely no argument about how damn good this guy is. I seriously doubt it'll take him longer than 4 years considering how healthy he's been. I hope he just flat-out destroys Bonds' "tainted" record.

ALL sports have their share of steroid and performance enhancing drug problems. I am sure even in a highly competitive sport such as CURLING you will even find dirty needles and dark characters with large heads hiding in the shadows....

The difference between a sport like baseball and say an international sport like Track and Field is that if you come up dirty at a track meet, you get an automatic 2 year ban. A second offense is a life ban and everyone gets tested and tested all the time. Steroid testing in most other sports has been around for almost 20 years in other sports but not baseball. Baseball just buried its head in the sand and ignored the problem until it took Congress investigating the sport (and threatening to take away their anti trust exemption) to get changes made.

So yes the problem exists across the board, there will always be people trying to cheat. The difference is, baseball is about 20 years behind the times in trying to catch people who cheat like that.

It's because we liked seeing the long ball leave the stadiums so much. With all the strikes going on over the last 30 years and baseballs numbers declining; in 98 two saviors emerged, McGwire and Sosa. They were hitting homers like The RCB puts down beers and brats at the tailgates. Suddenly the number of fans tuning in and showing up at the parks were up all over the board. 20,000 people would show up just to watch batting practice for those two. It's no wonder MLB turned a blind eye to steroid use. Money was coming in, people were putting their butts in seats all over the league. Why ruin a good thing by cracking down on your stars for hitting the long ball and producing runs...After all, us Americans like high scoring games.

I remember that summer of 98 very well. it was quite exciting..but to now look back on it and know that it was tainted..does take away a little bit of the luster.
I still like baseball...not the best thing to watch on TV unless the game really means something(playoffs, world series, etc) but it is fun going to the ballpark, having a hot dog, and just taking in the whole experience.

Yet another similarity between pro wrestling and baseball. I think Sparky is on to something.

Thank god i was in Europe for 98 and missed it all. That was the year that I got to watch Andrei Shevchenko lead Dynamo Kiev to the semi finals of the Champion's League. Too bad they had to beat my beloved Sparta on penalties to get to the group stage that year. Excellent match regardless.
